The Triple Paradigm of Compilation and Dissemination of the Three Schools'Interpretations of Shijing in the Late Qing Dynasty—Centered on Scholars Such as Wei Yuan from Hunan Province
The academic trend of the Late Qing Dynasty turned towards"honoring diversity",and the three schools'interpretations of Shijing sought novelty and change while inheriting the previous in-terpretations,reviving the related studies in antient and modern texts of the Han Dynasty with innovative thinking and truth seeking.Wei Yuan rejuvenated the modern interpretations of Shijing, restoring the"teaching of Shijing"of pre-Qin Confucius and trying to moralize people by Confucian culture.Pi Xirui integrated modern literature with textual research, striving to restore the tradition of"moralization by Shijing"in the Han Dynasty,so as to interpret the political influence of Shijing.Wang Xianqian,on the other hand, based on the texts of the three schools of Shijing, returned to the tradition and studied them through gathering scaffered writings, textual research, exegesis, and distinguishing falsehood,to seek the"truth"of the texts. From Wei Yuan,Pi Xirui to Wang Xianqian, the three schools'interpretations of Shijing formed a powerful academic momentum, which challenged the dominant position of the ver-sion of Shijing compiled and annotated by Mao Heng and impacted the scholars studying Shijing so much that they began to make some critical reflections on the related studies in modern languages.
