A Study of Metaphor Translation Based on Toury's Thoughts of Descriptive Translation
The study explains the concept, nature, significance and characteristics of"pairs of re-placing+replaced segments"put forward by Gideon Toury, within the framework of which the six types of metaphor translation classified by Toury are discussed in detail. The prescriptive vs.the descrip-tive and the prospective vs.the retrospective in translation are dealt with starting both from the original language and from the target language and exemplified by the translation of metaphors from the source texts and the metaphors generated as part of end products.Centering on metaphor translation with two analytical perspectives and many different translation strategies, the study unfolds a panorama of meta-phor translation outlined by Toury. Objective descriptions and explanations of the translator's acts and the metaphor translation in this paper provide enlightening significance for a rational summary of the laws of literary translation, the prediction of future translation phenomena, and an effective avoidance of the possible constraints on translation activities.
