"Adhering to Ourselves, and Benefiting for Our Own Use":Haiguotuzhi in the Two-Way Communication Between China and Foreign Countries
Wei Yuan's Haiguotuzhi was the first book in which Chinese people talked about the world, bringing a picture of the new world to the closed and inaccessible China at that time, and inspiring modern China to learn from the West and strive for development. On the basis of Four Conti-nents by Lin Zexu,Wei Yuan selected, translated and rearranged western literature based on the reality of China at that time, with the purpose of understanding foreign situation and resisting foreign invasion. After Haiguotuzhi was spread overseas, international scholars translated its contents and ideas selectively with different motives due to their local conditions and personal identities. In the two-way communication be-tween Chinese and foreign cultures, either the composition of Haiguotuzhi or its overseas dissemination im-plied the principle of"adhering to ourselves, and benefiting for our own use".
