A Cognitive Study of Synaesthesia Metaphors in The English Patient
Philip Michael Ondaatje's novel The English Patient has been welcomed and loved in the academic field. This novel deeply impressed readers with profound synaesthesia metaphors created by the author.Guided by the Theory of Synaesthesia Metaphor, the sensory languages are analyzed and in-terpreted in a cognitive way in this paper, and found that:the synaesthesia metaphor in The English Pa-tient is ubiquitous, which mostly conforms to Ullmann's mapping laws of from concrete to abstraction, accessibility to inaccessibility, and low-level to high-level,but there are also a few counterexamples. The analysis of synaesthesia metaphors in this novel can deepen people's embodied experience and cog-nition of the cruelty of war and the novel's anti-war theme, and enhance its literary effect. Therefore,it is also of great value in the perspective of interdisciplinary research.
