Recent advances in cell membrane-coated nanoparticles for cancer phototherapy
Objective Conventional phototherapeutic agents are easily recognized by the immune system, rapidly cleared by the blood circulation, and low accumulation in the tumor, which further reduce the therapeutic efficacy of phototherapy.Cell membrane coating nanoparticles has emerged as a prospective strategy. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the advances of cell membrane-coated nanoparticles for cancer phototherapy. Methods The application of cell membranes coated nanoparticles in cancer phototherapy was classified and summarized by deeply collecting relevant literature data. Results Membranes from different cell can be coated on the nanoparticles by plenty preparation methods without changing the photophysical properties. The modified nanoparticles are also endowed with many additional physiological functions including immune escape, prolonged circulation time and homologous targeting and so on.Conclusion This review summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of several typical cell membranes such as erythrocytes, cancer cells, stem cells, platelets or macrophages. Therefore, this review will provide new thoughts of the cell membrane-camouflaged nanoparticles in cancer phototherapy.
