Research advances in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis and its treatment with traditional Chinese medicine based on the gut-brain-skin axis
Atopic dermatitis(AD)is a chronic allergic skin disease that is prone to recurrence, and its pathogenesis is mainly related to genetic, environmental, and immune factors. The development of AD is closely related to the intestinal flora and psycho-psychiatric state.Changes in intestinal flora structure and metabolites are associated with depression and inferiority in AD patients. There is a special way of communication between gut flora, the nervous system, and skin, called the"gut-brain-skin axis".Many researches based on the regulation of intestinal flora and the nervous system for the treatment of skin conditions have been reported, but the potential mechanism of the gut-brain-skin axis is still unclear.Traditional Chinese medicine exerts a good regulatory effect on the intestinal flora, neuroendocrine system, and skin immunity. However, basic and clinical evidence on the treatment of AD based on the communication between gut flora, the nervous system, and skin conditions(i.e.intestine-brain-cutaneous axis)is still lacking, and the target of action is unclear. Therefore, this manuscript summarizes the research progress of the gut-brain-dermis axis in the pathogenesis of AD according to the roles of intestinal flora imbalance and neuroendocrine dysfunction in the occurrence and development of AD.Meanwhile, the research progress of AD treatment by Chinese medicine through regulating the gut-brain-skin axis is discussed, which will provide new insight for the research of AD.
