Traditional Chinese medicine-loaded microneedles are a kind of novel drug delivery method to deliver the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine directly to the epidermis or dermis,which can greatly reduce patients'pain and improve the efficiency of transdermal drug delivery,and also can bypass the hepatic first-pass effect of orally taken traditional Chinese medicine.This paper describes the concept of traditional Chinese medicine-loaded microneedles,research progress,existing problems,and their development prospects.Here we also have summarized the main factors affecting the mechanical strength,drug loading capacity,and transdermal depth of traditional Chinese medicine-loaded microneedles by introducing the preparation methods and design factors of traditional Chinese medicine-loaded microneedles,which provides a reference for the optimal design of traditional Chinese medicine-loaded microneedles.
