Progress in the Study of Post-Infectious Irritable Bowel Syndrome Impairment of Intestinal Barrier Function
Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder, the exact pathogenesis of which has not yet been elucidated.Post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome(PI-IBS)is one of the subtypes. The intestinal mucosal barrier consists of four components:mechanical, immune, chemical and biological barriers, and plays a crucial role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis.Impairment of the intestinal mucosal barrier is associated with many diseases and this pathological altera-tion is objectively present in PI-IBS.The relationship between the mechanisms of impairment of intestinal barrier function and PI-IBS needs to be further investigated. This article provides an overview of the mechanisms of barrier impairment associated with PI-IBS to provide an insight into further research and possible clinical applications.
