The Scientific Nature of Qualitative Data Analysis and NVivo Application in Education
The scientific nature of qualitative data analysis has always been debated in the academic community.With the popularity of qualitative data analysis software,the efficiency and objectivity of qualitative research have been brought to the public's attention.Meanwhile,several misconceptions have emerged regarding the capabilities of the software.This study articulates the analysis procedure facilitated by NVivo software of a study in the educational field to explain what software can and cannot accomplish,thus further clarifying the scientific nature of qualitative analysis regarding analysis procedures.As a tool that enables researchers to organize ideas,record findings,question findings,and track,reflect on and share the process of drawing conclusions,NVivo facilitates the transition from familiarity with the text to structuring and integrating the data set with an efficient approach.It also promotes the visibility of complex interpretive practices.However,unless software techniques are coupled appropriately with qualitative methodologies and strategies,qualitative research analyses cannot be made more efficient and scientifically reliable.
