Protective effect of extract of Smilax glabra extracts on ulcerative colitis in mice
Objective To investigate the protective effect of aqueous ethanol extract of Smilax glabra on ulcerative colitis in mice.Meth-ods 48 female KM mice were kept for 2 d.They were numbered and weighed and then randomly divided into six groups(n=8):control group, model group,Liuzasulfadiazine-positive control group, and low, medium and high concentration of Smilax glabra groups. From day 3 to 11,mice in the control group were given normal water, and mice in the remaining groups were given 3%dextran sulfate sodium salt(Dextran Sulfate Sodium Salt,DSS)solution.Beginning on day 12,a drug intervention lasting for 8 days was performed:low(8 g-kg-1),medium(16 g-kg-1),and high(24 g-kg-1)concentrations of aqueous ethanolic extracts of Smilax glabra were used in the dosing group by gavage, mice in the control and model groups were given the same volume of normal saline, and mice in the posi-tive control group were used to use salicylazine sulfadiazine by gavage once a day.During the administration period, the mice were weighed every two days and the feces of each group were observed;the secretion of inflammatory factors in the colon tissue of mice was de-termind.Results Compared with the model group, the decrease of body weight, the decrease of colon length, the fecal status and blood in stool of the mice in the Smilax glabra group were significantly improved(P<0.05),the secretion of inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α decreased, and the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 increased. Conclusion The aqueous extract of Smilax glabra ethanol effectively alleviated the symptoms of UC mice.
