Research progress on development and utilization of Epimedium Linn germplasm resources in China
This article tries to review and summarize the classification history and progress of Epimedium Linn in China,thus guiding the utilization of its germplasm resources.Meanwhile,the status and development of Epimedium Linn resources and their utilization are briefly described.Currently,there are 52 species(including 2 varieties and 2 subspecies)of Epimedium Linn officially published in Chi-na.The Epimedium Linn is rich in species,and China has a significant advantage in germplasm resources.However,the resource situa-tion is not optimistic,with more than half of the species listed as threatened.In the development and utilization of resources,various forms of health products have been developed in recent years,such as health wine,honey health drinks,health tea,bread and yogurt,etc.However,long-term or excessive consumption may cause damage to the reproductive system.It is suggested that health products containing Epimedium should be strengthened in supervision.With unique and beautiful flower shapes,and strong ground cover,Epime-dium plants can be managed in a rough manner.The characteristics of the flower parts,flower color variation,and leaf variation can all be developed as ornamental traits.The market potential for ornamental and other garden applications of Epimedium plants is huge.
