A Film Semiotic Interpretation of Tolstoy's Three Deaths
The theme of death,as a contemplative subject in the ultimate life of Leo Tolstoy, was already reflected in his short story Three Deaths, published in 1859.The novel employs cine-matic artistic techniques to depict and contrast the death stories of three characters:madame, the old coach-man,and the big tree. With the aid of film semiotics theory, analyzing Three Deaths from the perspectives of montage techniques and sensory perception,it assists readers in observing multiple characters in the same scene from a third-person external viewpoint. It also highlights the distinct attitudes of different characters toward the same thing, and through the use of color rendering and auditory perception, enables readers to perceive the situations of the novel's characters and the author's emotional stance.Simultaneously,it con-tributes to a deeper understanding of Tolstoy's philosophy of life.
