A Contrastive Study of the English Translation of Mencius from the Perspective of Relevance-Adaptation Theory
Based on relevance theory and adaptation theory,relevance—adaptation theory integrates dis-course analysis and decision—making of discourse expression.In this framework,translators seek relevance within the cognitive environment of the source language while adapting dynamically within the cognitive context of the target language,thus offering guidance in translation studies.This article explores the varia-tions in the relevance—adaptation dynamics among different translators through a case study of the English translations of the Mencius.The findings indicate that translators will adopt different ways to adapt"osten-sive-inferential"cues across the physical,psychological,and communicative contexts.The primary reasons for these differences in relevance—adaptation lie in two factors:the varying backgrounds of the translators and their distinct language preferences.
