Macroscopic Traffic Flow Simulation for Re-current Congestion of Freeway Networks
We adopt macroscopic traffic flow simulation as a tool to make a systematic analysis of the recurrent congestion of a hypothetical urban freeway network. The freeway network traffic flow model used in simulation is the famous model—METANET.Through the simulation case study we carefully describe the forming, propagation, and dissolving of recurrent congestion during peak hours, analyze the traffic condition changes in the network, and address the cause of congestion and network operation performance degradation.Simulation case study shows that spot-level congestion(e.g.bottleneck at a merging area) will always evolve to network-level congestion and performance degradation, thus calling for control of freeway networks.
