Based on the correlation between character shapes and meanings,phonetic evolution pat-terns,and the characteristics of Yutian dialect,reference books and works such as Shuowen Jiezi(说文解字),Fangyan(方言),Guangyun(广韵),Yupian(玉篇)and Yanshuo(燕说)are used as references to ex-amine the original characters of 10 dialect words in the preface of Yutian County Annals published in the tenth year of Guangxu reign in order to help the understanding and retention of dialect words,and to sup-plement the corpus for the Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Dialects.
