A Semantic Study of"Xianchi"in the Pre-Qin and Han Dynasties
According to Qin and Han literature,"Xianchi"has three meanings:"place for sunbath-ing","name of constellation",and"name of music".By analyzing the frequency of usage of the three meanings,it can be concluded that"sunbathing place"has the lowest frequency of usage, while the other two terms have a much higher frequency of usage than this meaning, which is the opposite.Through re-search,it can be concluded that the original meaning and extended context of"Xu"and"Xian"are"name of constellation",referring to the three small stars in the White Tiger of the Western Palace. The White Tiger dominates the hunting expedition, and"Xianchi"dominates five grains, both of which are related to people's livelihoods. Therefore, the music for worshipping the Earth God is named after the"name of the constellation";Due to the characteristics of the movement pattern of Xianchi Star,it is extended to be the place for sunbathing".
