Study on the Plan of New Coal Export Route from the East in Northern Shaanxi
In 2022,the coal production in Yulin, northern Shaanxi, reached 584 million tons, including 300 million tons transported via railways. The long-term railway coal freight volume is predicted to increase to 480 million tons, including 260 million tons destined for eastern regions. The region heavily relies on the Baotou-Xi'an Railway, which connects lateral railways such as Taiyuan-Zhongwei-Yinchuan,Huangling-Hancheng-Houma,Lanzhou-Lianyungang,and Baotou-Lanzhou lines for coal transportation. However, due to the saturated capacity on the Yulin-Suide section of the Baotou-Xi'an Railway and the near-saturated capacity on the subsequent route of the Taiyuan-Zhongwei-Yinchuan Railway(Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan section),these existing routes cannot meet the growing demand for further eastward coal transportation in the region. Therefore, this paper proposed a new transportation route for eastward coal transportation in northern Shaanxi. The research compared two schemes from the perspectives of project investment, channel scale, operation management, transportation organization, channel layout, and economic stimulation along the route:first, expanding the capacity on the existing route from Shenmuxi to Watang, and second, building a new Yulin-Jiaxian-Linxian route.Expanding the capacity along the existing Western Shenmu-Watang route optimizes the utilization of the existing railway infrastructure and surplus transportation capabilities. This approach involves a smaller engineering scale, serves more coal mines along the route, and maximizes the overall efficiency of the rail network;and it establishes a direct and smooth route for eastward Shaanxi coal transportation, which addresses the insufficient transportation capacity while relieving the capacity on the bottleneck section of the Baotou-Xi'an line, supporting southbound coal transportation from Shaanxi.
