In this paper, the contingent valuation method(CVM)was used to investigate the willingness to pay of Suzhou residents for the classified treatment of kitchen waste, and the impact mechanism of residents'cognitive level on willingness to pay was explored with residents'policy support as the intermediary variable. The empiri-cal results show that(1)76%of the respondents are willing to pay corresponding fees for the classified treatment of kitchen waste, and the average intended payment amount is 0.63 yuan·kg-1 of kitchen waste.(2)Residents'perception of the environmental pollution risk of clean houses, the satisfaction of clean house supervisors, the recognition of social norms, and the support of policies all have a positive impact on willingness to pay.(3)Resi-dents'perception of environmental pollution risk of clean houses, social norms, and government supervision level will also positively affect willingness to pay by improving residents'policy support.Based on this,it is suggested that government departments strengthen communication with residents, and that personnel from official units set an example.Meanwhile,it is suggested to strengthen the publicity of knowledge about environmental health risks, and to establish a reward and penalty mechanism for waste sorting, and formulate standardized norms for sorting behavior. The level of government supervision should be improved, the informatization construction of waste sort-ing management to be promoted, and a balance of trust between the government and residents to be established.
