In this study, silicon powder acquired via flotation of the refining slag of metallurgical grade silicon(MGS)was chosen as the basis of the experiments.High temperature smelting was adopted to separate silicon from the remai-ning slag. The effect of atmosphere and content of fusion agent addition on the separation of silicon from remaining slag were investigated. For each smelting experiment,10 g of powder sample was heated to 1450℃and held for 5 min un-der Ar protection or in air.The smelted samples were then mounted in resin and polished to show the cross-section and investigate the feature and size distribution of silicon drops within per unit area. Thus, the gathering and combining features of silicon drops and their separation process from slag can be evaluated.Meanwhile, impurity elements within the silicon drops before and after smelting under different circumstances were also measured. Results indicate:Ar pro-tection can postpone the gathering and combining of silicon drops and deteriorate the separation of silicon from the slag.Adding 1%~2%of fusion agent can accelerate the gathering and separation of silicon from slag.Under the condition of air atmosphere and 2%fusion agent addition,Al and Ca in silicon can be removed obviously;Fe and Ti can be re-moved partially.
