The Emergence of Tiaowan as a Recreational Activity and its Spread within Gaogouli's Territory
Tiaowan is an ancient Chinese recreational activity that originated during the pre-Qin period.Later,it became one of the important acrobatic skills that prevailed in the Han Dynasty.Gaogouli, aregime established by ethnic groups in Northeast China in the Han Dynasty, had been proactively absorbing and accepting the cultural resources of the Central Plains during its national development.Subsequently,as the national power of Gaogouli expanded, its folk culture, among other aspects, began to profoundly take on influences from the culture of the Central Plains. With this trend,Tiaowan was introduced from the Central Plains to Gaogouli as a recreational activity, and soon gained much favor across the societal ranks, from the nobles to the commoners,as verified by the ancient tomb murals. From Gaogouli,Tiaowan then further spread eastward to the Korean Peninsula and the archipelago of Japan. In conclusion,Gaogouli played a significant role as a hub in the eastward spread of cultures of Central Plains,as exemplified by Tiaowan.
