The formal introduction of elderly education classes and courses in Japan has a history of over seventy years. This study focuses primarily on educational institutions that offer elderly education programs, such as the elderly education courses organized by senior universities, civic centers and other organizations.By summarizing these courses, this study aims to sum up the experience and methods used in Japanese elderly education to promote the social participation of the elderly.Japanese elderly education extends beyond classroom, tending to encourage the elderly to step out of the classroom and engage with society, thereby helping them to strengthen social ties, reduce anxiety about life, feel their social value, and become"leaders"in regional development.
