Cheng Yi's Chun Qiu Zhuan and His Hermeneutics of Chun Qiu
Cheng Yi was the promoter of the study of Chun Qiu in the Song dynasty. He regarded Chun Qiu as the use of sages, and thought that scholars could accomplish their thoughts just by reading it.He revealed main points of the study of Confucian classics. For instance,Zuo Zhuan stated historical events while Chun Qiu stated judgements;applying Zuo Zhuan to examine the deeds of Chun Qiu,while applying Chun Qiu to distinguish the authenticity of Zuo Zhuan. Thus the function of Zuo Zhuan in interpreting the classics was highlighted. In his later years,he wrote Chun Qiu Zhuan, which expounded on the righteousness of human relationships, compliance with the duty, respect for the King of Zhou, expelling of the barbarians. He also held principles of justice and humanity to replace the subtle and hidden meanings of the words and to carry out creative interpretations.Cheng Yi's Chun Qiu Zhuan has some rough hints with regard to the writing style in Chun Qiu of whether to write or not to write,to name or not to name;with the meaning of"to seize,to advance or retreat,to praise,to depreciate,to persuade or to punish,"the writing method of"to suppress,to control and to reveal,"the writing style of"if things were the same, then the words would be the same,"and"when things were the same, but the words were different".Observing all things and gathering all materials,it is a systematic and macroscopic method of event arrangement and word connection.
