From Poet to Prophet:Muse,Angel and Maximin in Stefan George's Work
Stefan George was an important figure in the early 20th-century German intellectual history, with self-reference at the core of his poetics. That is,the ancient muse is no longer the source of inspiration, but only a witness to the modern poet's self-crowning;the Christian angel is no more than the poet's alter ego, spreading gospel of educational eros in order to form a secret society of elites centered on the relationship of master and disciples;Maximin is the"New God"created by George himself, who will lead the youth to build a"New Reich"on the ruins of a chaotic world.Muse, angel and Maximin, the three incarnations of divinity that run through George's work, are all crafted by the poet himself, corresponding to George's triple identity as king, mentor and prophet.
