The Study on the Aging Correlates of Oral Fluency in the Elderly
Spoken language fluency is an important basis for measuring language output ability, and the measurement indexes of spoken language fluency involve two dimensions:temporal and linguistic indexes. In this article, the temporal indicators were subdivided into six sub-indicators,including speech rate, articulation rate,phonation-time ratio, mean length of runs, number of silent pauses, and mean length of silent pauses while the linguistic indicators were subdivided into five sub-indicators,including number of filled pauses, mean length of filled pauses, number of repetition, number of revision, and ratio of pruned length to total length,to investigate the intrinsic association between oral fluency and aging in older adults. The study found that the overall spoken fluency of the elderly showed a gradual decrease with aging, and there was a significant correlation between fluency and aging, but the performance of the 11 sub-indicators was not consistent, among which three indicators, namely, speech rate, articulation rate and mean length of runs, were significantly correlated with aging, while the remaining eight indicators were only weakly correlated with aging.
