A Study on Metaphorical Cognitive Understanding of Chinese Children based on the Metaphor View of Relevance Theory
This study examines the development of Chinese children's metaphorical comprehension ability through the method of sentence interpretation. The metaphorical sentence comprehension test, story comprehension test and ad hoc concept of semantics interview test were used to investigate 60 children's comprehension of different types of metaphors in different age groups,to investigate the development characteristics of children's ability to construct ad hoc concepts, and to analyze the correlation between children's ability to construct ad hoc concepts and metaphor understanding. The results showed that there was a correlation between children's ability to construct ad hoc concepts and their ability to understand metaphors, both of which gradually increase with age,and gradually decrease with the increase of the difficulty of metaphor types.Meanwhile, the study also found that children's process of constructing ad hoc concepts to understand metaphors was influenced by contextual factors.
