The Ottoman Imperial Land Code and its Impact on the Middle East
The Ottoman Imperial Land Code,which was promulgated in 1858 during the Tanzimat period,was an important law.The Code was based on the distinction between state land and private land,which assured state control over the land,encouraged the development of privatization of state land.The influence of the capitalism in farming and the transition from feudalism to capitalism of the Ottoman Empire was reflected in the Code.With the implementation of the Code,the revenue was increased,the farming commercialization accelerated,many state land began private,and the large estates were formative.The difference between the Code and the traditional land systems was a contributing factor to rural unrest.It had a profound impact on the Middle East.
