"Hometown"in Media:The Sense of Place and Its Power Discourse Construction in Overseas Chinese WeChat Groups
In the WeChat group, the media practices of the overseas Chinese community towards their hometown have complex symbolic representations and discursive constructions. It is found that there are three types of"compounded sense of place"in the WeChat group, namely, the representation of the real place, the sense of place in the virtual community itself, and the sense of place constructed by the policy discourse. On this basis, the study analyzes how the united front discourse in the group affects the subjectivization of the Overseas Chinese from the perspective of power discourse theory, and finds that the Overseas Chinese continuously constructs their patriotic and hometown-loving subjectivities in a dialectical cycle of the"objectification"of the united front policy discourse and their own dynamic and spontaneous discursive practices.
