Effects of Reward and Punishment Motivation on Attentional Bias in Male Alcohol-dependent Patients
The attentional bias of alcohol-dependent patients towards alcohol stimuli plays an important role in the development and maintenance of addiction.Exploring how reward and punishment motivation affect the attention of alcohol-dependent patients towards alcohol stimuli can provide theoretical evidence for clinical detoxification treatment, thereby reducing the negative effects of alcohol dependence. In order to investigate the attentional bias of alcohol-dependent patients towards alcohol stimuli under reward and punishment conditions,22 alcohol-dependent patients have been undergoing inpatient treatment at a mental health center in Shandong Province and 22 matched healthy controls completed a dot-probe task under reward and punishment conditions. The results showed that:Alcohol-dependent patients showed attentional bias towards alcohol stimuli under the condition of no reward and punishment, which was manifested as difficulty in disengaging attention, while the attentional bias disappeared under the reward and punishment conditions. The healthy control group participants did not show any attentional bias towards alcohol stimuli under different reward and punishment conditions. The results suggested that reward and punishment motivation can be an important tool in helping alcohol-dependent patients to quit drinking and enhance treatment effects.
