Mechanism of energy efficiency improvement driven by digital economy policy
Based on the panel data from 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2021,the"Broadband China"demonstration city policy is used as a quasi-natural experiment to examine the impact and mechanism of digital economy policy shock on energy efficiency with multiple-period difference-in-differences model. The empirical results reveal that the"Broadband China"demonstration city policy has driven the improvement of energy efficiency and the conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests. The study of mechanism finds that digital economy improves energy efficiency by strengthening green innovation and promoting financial development.Heterogeneity analysis shows that the"Broadband China"demonstration city policy can promote the improvement of energy efficiency in old industrial bases effectively, but it has no significant impact on non-old industrial bases. The policy can effectively promote the improvement of energy efficiency in first-tier and second-tier cities, but it has no significant impact on other cities.Further study reveals that the"Broadband China"demonstration city policy has a spatial spillover effect on the improvement of energy efficiency, and has a driving effect on the improvement of energy efficiency in the surrounding area.
