Impact of digital economy development on urban-rural income gap from the perspective of common prosperity:empirical analysis based on inter-provincial panel data from 2010 to 2021
Gradually narrowing the urban-rural income gap is an inherent requirement for common prosperity.With the development of digital economy,its role in promoting urban-rural integration and coordinated development of regional economy has attracted much attention.Theoretical analysis shows that the development of digital economy has both positive and negative effects on urban-rural income distribution,i.e.digital dividend and digital divide,and there exist dynamic nonlinear changes in the net effects of the two.Using inter-provincial panel data from 2010 to 2021 in China,this paper empirically analyzes the impact of digital economy development on urban-rural income gap in the process of common prosperity.The results show that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between digital economy development and urban-rural income gap,that is to say,with the development of digital economy,income distribution has gradually shifted from being dominated by the digital divide effect to being dominated by the digital dividend effect.At the same time,there is regional heterogeneity in the income distribution effect in the development of digital economy.There mainly exists the digital dividend effect in the eastern region while there is more obvious digital divide effect in the early stage in the central and western regions with digital dividend effect becoming more significant later.The level of urbanization and digital inclusive finance are important threshold variables in the income distribution effect of digital economy.Regions with higher urbanization rates and digital inclusive finance indices are better able to unleash the digital dividend effect of digital economy.In order to accelerate the pace of common prosperity between urban areas and rural areas,it is necessary to expand the construction of digital infrastructure in rural areas,enhance the digital knowledge and skills of rural residents,promote urban-rural integration and development,and push the development of digital inclusive finance to fully tap into the digital dividend.
