Large-scale sports events have extensive social and economic impacts.Utilizing these events to promote urban development and improve the ecological environment is an important part of building a sports powerhouse and promoting high-quality development of sports. In the new era, guided by the concept of green and sustainable development, environmental protection and sustainability have become important goals for sports events.Local governments also take hosting large-scale sports events as an opportunity to enhance environmental regulations, hoping that sports events can become a driving force for green urban development. This paper used the DEA-SBM model to measure the environmental governance efficiency of China's top 100 cities and uses the spatial difference-in-differences method to analyze the impact of hosting national-level comprehensive sports events from 2010 to 2019 on urban environmental governance, environmental regulation, and green innovation in these cities. The results showed that bidding for large events significantly improves the environmental governance efficiency of the host cities, and this result remains valid after controlling for variables that could affect the outcome, such as urban industrial structure, human capital level, industrial sector size, and environmental governance expenditure.Mechanism tests found that large-scale sports events can improve environmental governance efficiency through two pathways:increasing the intensity of environmental regulations and green innovation in the host locations. This study proves that sports events in China have become an active and effective way of environmental governance, capable of promoting the long-term development of new quality green productivity in cities.
