Revision and Statistical Measurement of Engel's Coefficient Under the Goal of Common Prosperity
Common prosperity is the essential requirement of socialism.Accurately measuring and evaluating the degree of common prosperity is of significant practical importance for achieving Chinese-style modernization.Engel's coefficient,an inter-nationally accepted indicator reflecting the standard of living or wealth level of residents or regions,is often incorporated into the monitoring and evaluation system of common prosperity. Its scientificity and rationality are crucial to the assessment results.How-ever,traditional Engel's coefficient does not correctly reflect the actual living standards of Chinese residents.Starting from the es-sence of Engel's law and combining the intrinsic characteristics of common prosperity, this paper classifies residents'consump-tion according to actual needs, then redefines Engel's coefficient on this basis, and finally derives a corresponding revised formu-la.Furthermore,the paper uses the micro data of CFPS in 2020 to verify the feasibility and rationality of the revised Engel's coef-ficient,finding that the revised Engel's coefficient can reflect the living standards and prosperity degree of Chinese residents more accurately, and that its relationship with income levels is more in line with Engel's law.
