Research Progress on Innovation Effects of Firm Digital Transformation:An Integrative Theoretical Framework
The innovation effects of firm digital transformation have emerged as a cutting-edge research topic that has attracted attention from both academia and industry in recent years. However,to date,no literature has systematically integrated the complex relationships between digital transformation and different types of firm innovation. This paper, based on a systematic review on both domestic and international empirical literature, develops an integrative theoretical framework to advance the understanding of how digital transformation can both promote and inhibit firm innovation. The study indicates that digital transformation promotes firm innovation through increasing firm resource investment, enhancing firm governance capabilities, and improving the external business environment. However, excessive digital transformation can also hinder firm innovation by increasing information governance demands and by generating learning and competition effects. The study also highlights that whether a firm can effectively unleash the innovation potential of digital transformation largely depends on external environmental factors and internal resources and capabilities.Future research needs to further identify the enabling effects of digital transformation on other types of innovation, explore how to avoid the"too much of a good thing"effect of digital transformation on firm innovation, and expand the research scope on the innovation effects of digital transformation from individual firms to innovation ecosystems.
