Has the National E-commerce Demonstration City Policy Reduced Carbon Emissions?——Empirical Data from Cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt
Based on the policy of National E-commerce Demonstration City as a quasi-natural experiment, this paper selects the panel data of 106 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2006 to 2020,and uses the Difference-in-Difference method to test the impact of urban e-commerce transformation on urban carbon emission reduction. The results show that the urban e-commerce transformation significantly reduces the carbon emission level of cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and it still holds after multiple robustness tests. The urban e-commerce transformation mainly realizes the carbon emission reduction effect by promoting the upgrading of industrial structure, reducing energy consumption and promoting green technology innovation, and the effect is different in different geographical locations and urban characteristics. In view of this, cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt should summarize the construction experience of demonstration cities, increase support for the concept of green development of e-commerce,and adopt city-specific e-commerce transformation strategies to achieve two-way coordinated promotion of economic development and environ-mental protection.
