Research on the Private Book Collections of Huizhou Merchants in the Qing Dynasty and Their Historical Contributions to Cultural Heritage:A Case Study of Bao Tingbo,a Merchant from Shexian
This article delves into the cultural contributions of Qing Dynasty's Shexian Confucian merchant Bao Tingbo.His efforts are pivotal for Huizhou and Chinese literature inheritance.Employing literature research and case analysis,it gathers diverse materials like official records,chronicles,notes,family docs,and academic works.Centering on Bao,it combs his book endeavors and distills values.With four remarkable feats in preservation:establishing the Bao family's"Zhi Bu Zu"library to preserve rare ancient books;spending 30 years overseas to acquire the domestically lost"Classic of Filial Piety in Ancient Chinese Literature";donating over 600 books from his collection to the"Siku Pavilion"of the imperial court to support the compilation of the grand literature work"Si Ku Quan Shu";combining the power of three generations of ancestors and grandchildren to compile and publish the"Zhi Bu Zu Series"that is the crown of the Qing Dynasty's published series.The Hui merchants actively invest in cultural undertakings,and meticulously collecting,rescuing,and restoring Chinese literature.They have played a pivotal role in disseminating the Huizhou hometown culture and significantly contributed to the preservation and inheritance of Chinese culture.
