Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of acarbose and metformin in the treatment of type 2 diabe-tes mellitus. Methods A total of 151 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated in the Third Hospital of Fuqing from January 2022 to February 2024 were selected as the study objects and divided into the control group and the study group by different treatment methods. The control group(75 patients)were treated with metformin, and the study group(76 patients)were treated with acarbose. The blood glucose indexes(fasting plasma glucose,2-hour postpran-dial plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1c),islet function indexes(islet β cell function index, insulin resistance in-dex)and the incidence of drug-related adverse reactions(nausea and vomiting, abdominal distension, diarrhea)were compared between the two groups. Results After treatment, the blood glucose levels of the study group were lower than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(all P<0.05).Islet β cell function in-dex in study group was higher than that in control group, and insulin resistance index was lower than those in control group, the differences were statistically significant(both P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion The hypoglycemic effect and the recovery of pro-moting islet function of acarbose in treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus are more effective than metformin. The prob-ability of adverse reactions after the use of the two drugs is similar, and both have high safety.
