Objective To explore the clinical efficacy of adding empagliflozin on the basis of metformin treatment in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)and its effect on glucose and lipid metabolism. Methods A total of 106 elderly patients with T2DM admitted to the First Rongfu Military Hospital of Jilin Province from January 2022 to January 2024 were selected as the research objects.According to different treatment methods, they were divided into the conventional group(metformin treatment)and the observation group(metformin combined with empagliflozin treatment),with 53 cases in each group. The clinical efficacy, glucose and lipid metabolism levels were compared be-tween the two groups. Results The total effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the conventional group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Before treatment, there were no statistically significant differences in glucose and lipid metabolism between the two groups(all P>0.05).After 90 days of treatment, the levels of 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1c,total cholesterol and triglycer-ide in the observation group were lower than those in the conventional group, and the differences were statistically significant(all P<0.05).Conclusion Metformin combined with empagliflozin has significant clinical efficacy and bet-ter control of glucose and lipid metabolism in elderly patients with T2DM.
