Consideration on CO2 marine storage and exploration of new paths
To realize the goal of"carbon peaking and carbon neutrality"is not only a global consensus on combating climate change, but also in urgent need for China to assume its responsibilities as a major country and to promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind.Currently, carbon storage in China is conducted in the form of gaseous or liquid CO2,with site selection mainly onshore.Compared with marine carbon storage, terrestrial carbon storage has less potential and higher requirements for geological and operation conditions.Ocean is the most active carbon reservoir with huge storage potential on the earth. In China, however, there is only one marine CO2 storage demonstration project, namely Enping 15-1.In order to speed up the realization of CO2 marine storage, this paper proposes a new idea of solid-state CO2 hydrate storage, and explores an overall path for marine carbon storage. And the following research results are obtained.First, based on reverse thinking from the development of methane hydrates and the far easier conditions for the formation of CO2 hydrates than that of methane hydrates,CO2 can form a carbon mine of CO2 hydrate when it is injected into the seabed.Second, injecting liquid CO2 directly into the sediments beneath the methane hydrate layer according to the principle of"solid fluidization"can not only make use of CO2 to replace and exploit methane hydrates, but also form CO2 hydrates in the seabed to realize carbon storage.Third,it is possible to achieve the coordinated development of oil and gas field exploitation and marine carbon storage by utilizing the existing oil and gas field development platforms and equipment and selecting favorable geological structures and saline aquifers. In conclusion, this method has been experimentally verified to be feasible, and it is expected to offer a new solution for future carbon capture, utilization and storage(CCUS).
