Non-traditional hydrocarbon resources:New physical domains with great potential for petroleum exploration and development
Depending on whether traps(or reservoirs)are involved in current disciplines of petroleum geology, they can be divided into traditional and non-traditional types.Compared with traditional traps(or reservoirs),the non-traditional are featured by peculiar form, complex internal structure, strong heterogeneity, diverse source-reservoir-caprock assemblage, unique reservoir-forming mech-anisms,and subtle distribution.Even some of them are regarded as forbidden zones according to traditional geological theories. The discovered and developed non-traditional ones contain outcrop reservoirs,fault-karst reservoirs,fault-fracture reservoirs, and fault-crust reservoirs. And they are becoming hot spots and highlights in exploration and development.Their geological and reservoir-form-ing setting is extremely complex in China.Considerably numerous traps(or reservoirs)have not been incorporated into classic petro-leum geology yet. There exist abundant non-traditional hydrocarbon resources mostly in ultra-deep and deep strata or water, plateau, polar regions, special climate areas, and even outside basins, representing new domains appearing for exploration.
