Chinese Path to Modernization of Public Libraries:Historical Investigation and Realistic Reflection on Building People-Centered Library
In the process of Chinese path to modernization,the challenge of China's population structure adjustment is increasingly apparent.Building a people-centered library is the key to respond to the strategic transformation and career change of libraries.The paper traces the historical origin of the idea of building a people-centered library and examines the evolution of the role and functional positioning of people in libraries.The paper is clear that library have evolved from a focus on collections to a focus on the professional abilities of librarians,moving towards a reader centered approach,and gradually forming a people-centered construction concept.The overall logical framework for building a people-centered library should be characterized from three levels:role positioning,construction content,and construction projects.It clarifies the three key roles of readers,librarians,and social forces.Based on this,three key actions should be taken for future construction of puldic libraries:strengthening the user centered concept and promoting the modernization and transformation of public libraries;emphasize the improvement of librarians'professional abilities and promote the social value of public libraries;promote innovation in social participation mechanisms and improve the layout of the library system.
