Which Types of Institutional Collaboration Produce Higher Academic Impact?A Case Study from the Field of Natural Language Processing
Collaboration with industry allows academic results to be put into practice,but different models of collaboration have different impacts on the collaboration.Examining the relationship between the type of institutional collaboration and the academic impact in a given field can provide insights into the differences in academic impact generated by different types of collaboration,in order to identify which types of collaboration are likely to be more productive or efficient.Using the field of Natural Language Processing(NLP)as an example,this article explores the relationship between the type of institutional collaboration and academic impact,in order to help institutions better plan their collaboration strategies and improve the effectiveness of their collaborations.In this article,institutions are categorized into academic and industrial institutions,and the types of collaboration are divided into five categories:inter-academic,intra-academic,academic-industrial,inter-industrial and intra-industrial collaboration.Citation frequency information is retrieved from Google Scholar for papers published in the five types of collaboration,and the highly cited papers are defined.The article uses the two metrics to measure academic impact,and assigns the papers to different tasks in the field of NLP.It is found that academic-industrial collaborations tend to have higher academic impact,and there are differences in the types of institutional collaborations with the highest academic impact in different tasks.
