Social Structural Foundation of Information Poverty:Based on the Information Worlds of Individuals
Using data from the 2012 and 2020 surveys of adults in different regions of China, this paper presents the operational definition of information polarization based on poverty and wealth in individuals'information worlds, and examines the influence of socio-economic status on people's information richness from the perspective of the knowledge gap.The study suggests that the level of income has a positive effect on the richness of the content in individuals's information worlds and on the types and frequency of their participation in information practices;the influence of occupational types on each aspect of individuals'information worlds is usually the result of a joint action with education, income and other factors;the people with higher education outperform those with basic education or no education in terms of the content and boundaries of the personal information worlds. However, the level of education does not significantly explain the differences in the types of information practices in which people are involved.
