A Systematic Review of Misinformation Screening Research Using Eye-tracking Technology
The study of misinformation screening is crucial to understanding and managing false information, while eye-tracking technology plays an important role in information behavior studies. This paper analyzes how the technology is applied in misinformation screening, and outlines the relevant theories, indicators, and explanatory perspectives, using bibliometric and content analysis methods. The findings indicate that despite the relatively late application of eye-tracking technology in the field of misinformation screening, relevant studies are interdisciplinary and well-recognized,focusing on the subjects and objects of information, and employing cognitive psychological frameworks such as dual-processing theory,heuristic-systematic model, and elaboration likelihood model. The paper summarizes 14 eye-tracking indicators, and examines their practical application and relationship with research variables in terms of time, space, and pupil diameter. It introduces the theories interpreting the indicators, such as the eye-mind hypothesis, the non-eye-mind hypothesis, and cognitive effort, and argues that it is essential to establish links between problems, theories, indicators, and explanatory perspectives in the studies of misinformation screening using eye-tracking techniques.
