Preparation of coal liquefied pitch-based activated carbon and its adsorption performance for m-xylene
By carbonization and KOH activation, high specific surface area pitch-based activated carbons were prepared from coal liq-uefied pitch, and the effect of alkali-carbon ratio on the pore structure of activated carbon was investigated. The pore volume of activa-ted carbon shows a trend of increasing and then decreasing with the increase of alkali-carbon ratio, and a super activated carbon with a specific surface area of 3 188.0 m2/g and a pore volume of 1.87 cm3/g was prepared at an alkali-carbon ratio of 5.The activated car-bon samples were characterized by N2 adsorption and desorption,X-ray diffraction(XRD)and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR).In the adsorption study, gaseous m-xylene was selected as the adsorbent for dynamic adsorption experiments. The adsorption performance and the relationship between pore volume and adsorption capacity of coal liquefied pitch-based activated carbon for m-xy-lene were investigated. The adsorption capacity of m-xylene is proportional to the pore volume of the activated carbon, and the maximum adsorption capacity of m-xylene can reach 1 174.7 mg/g at 300×10-6.The pore volume of activated carbon with pore size ranging from 1.4 nm to 5.0 nm plays a major role in the adsorption of m-xylene.
