Abstract
Stone monuments became more and more indispensable in the Tang Dynasty's royal mausoleums. The Tang rulers constructed a whole new system of Stone carvings on base of the Sui,Northern and Southern Dynasties as well as their own ideas of invention. The first three mausoleums,Xianling of the Emperor Gaozu,Zhaoling of the Emperor Taizong and Qianling of the Emperor Gaozong adopted different elements and layouts of stone carvings which were selected from the Northern and Southern Dynasties.Mountain-tomb mounds, wide and long spirit road with stone columns, steles and animals were adopted from the Southern Dynasties while the pyramid-mounds,square castles with four gates were inherited from the mausoleum system of the Sui and Northern Dynasties.Stone figures of guards along the spirit road were elements from Northern Dynasties while the features of stone carvings and the idea of setting up mythical creatures to guard the mausoleum had been influenced both by the Southern and Northern Dynasties.Stone carving system of Tang imperial mausoleums provides an important evidence and perspective for the construction of the rites, regulations and laws in the Tang Dynasty.
