Abstract
Yao Chong was once the talented and virtuous prime minister in the Tang Dynasty. His original name was Yao Yuanchong, and Yuanzhi was his style. At the early time of Shengl i Reign,he was renamed Yao Yuanzhi by Emperor Wu Zetian. After Emperor Xuanzong acceded,Yao Yuanzhi was renamed Yao Chong since the character"Yuan"was used in Emperor Xuanzong's imperial honorific title"Kai Yuan Shen Wu Emperor".Although it was evidently recorded that Yao Yuanchong was renamed Yao Yuanzhi by Wu Zetian, historians Si Maguang,Ou Yangxiu and Hu Sanxing held the view that during Emperor Wu Zetian's reign,Yao Chong was named after his style. The reasonable explanation was that the name Yuanzhi was the same as the style Yuanzhi, which was traditional in the Tang Dynasty. The Old Tang History Book(《旧唐书》)and Zizhi Tongjian(《资治通鉴》)have accounted Yao Chong's history by using the names"Yao Yuancong","Yao Yuanzhi"and"Yao Chong",which showed the respect for historical fact. However, the Yao Chong's Biography in The New Tang History Book(《新唐书》)had only used the name"Yao Chong"when accounting his whole life. From the perspective of keeping historical authenticity, the role of The New Tang History Book is inferior to The Old Tang History Book.
