Abstract
Cui Dan and Cui Xie,who belonged to Cui Clan from Qinghe Xiaofang(清河小房),were outstanding in the Tang and Five Dynasties. After the middle Tang Dynasty, the Cui Dan families prospered, and there were two prime ministers Cui Dan and Cui Xie.Cui Yan's brothers and their two sons, five of whom presided over imperial examination for seven times in the middle and late Tang Dynasty. There were so many senior officials in his families that there is no comparable companions. Many of the Cui Dan's families passed on Confucianism and learned a lot,but before the heyday of the Tang Dynasty, the official position was humble, only the social reputation of the noble scholars remained. The imperial examination was the only way for the clan to ascend the political top again after the middle Tang Dynasty.Forty cases of marriage could be examined in their families. They married five surnames nobility in Shandong and concentrated on four clans namely the Guzang branch of Li's family in Longxi, the first and second branches of Lu's northern family in Fanyang as well as the Xiaobai branch of Zheng's northern family in Xingyang, except for two cases of Guanlong nobility and one case of other nobility, which were typical representatives of the marriage of powerful families in the Tang Dynasty. The influence of Cui Dan family declined sharply since the reign of Emperor Xizong. In the later Tang Dynasty,Cui Xie's involvement was just like a reflection. The chaos of Huang Chao was the key factor for the decline of his family. The birthplace of the Cui Dan family was Wucheng County,Qinghe prefecture, both recording in The Old Tang History Book(《旧唐书》)and The New Tang History Book(《新唐书》).From the unearthed epitaph,we can know that at least from the time of Emperor Gaozong in the Tang Dynasty,Cui's descendants lived and were buried in Luoyang until the early Song Dynasty.
