Abstract
In the early Tang Dynasty, the traditions of the Southern and Northern Dynasties were inherited, and the genealogy especially emphasized the great clans and their grade evaluation. In the early Tang Dynasty, the official and private genealogy of great clans coexisted, but there were obvious differences in the criteria for judging the great clans between them. The official genealogy emphasized the current official rank, while the private genealogy still emphasized the old families. In the heyday of the Tang Dynasty, with Liu Chong et al.s compilation of Record of the Lineages of the Great Clans(《姓族系 录》)as a sign, the official and private genealogy of great clans merged, emphasizing both the current officials and the old families.Since then, the imperial court no longer organized the compilation of large-scale genealogy of great clans, and the privately compilation of Classified Standards of the Hundred Clans(《百家类例》)became the mainstream of genealogy of great clans. However, influenced by the official genealogy,Classified Standards of the Hundred Clans was of considerable credibility and with the nature of quasi-official compiling genealogy. In the late Tang Dynasty, with the decline of the clan system and family concept, the private genealogy of great clans also declined. The genealogy of the Tang Dynasty had undergone a transformation, focusing on the knowledge of surnames such as origin and location.
