Abstract
The Fuxian Monastery in Luoyang is a grand royal Buddhist monastery founded by Wuzetian(武则天)to commemorate her dead mother. The author systematically analyzed atchitecture, statues, monks and Buddhist affairs of the Fuxian Monastery basing on the comprehensive literature review as well as simultaneously explored relevant social and cultural information. The monastery completed reconstruction projects such as the construction of a tower during the Emperor Gaozong(高宗)period, and became a large-scale monastery with multiple courtyards during Wuzhou(武周)period. At the beginning of the restoration of Li-Tang Dynasty, the monastery developed prosperously, but gradually declined after the Emperor Xuanzong(玄宗)period. The pagoda of Fuxian Monastery,as well as two monuments made by the Emperor Wu Zetian(武则天)and Zhongzong(中宗)were erected as distinctive cultural and political view on the south side of the main traffic road since 705.The statue of Maitreya from Puzhou(濮州)in the monastery has become rare material for understanding such images. The eminent monks, such as Div ā kara(地婆诃罗),Bodhiruci(菩提流志)and Yijing(义净),successively translated scriptures here, and actively participated in the cultural construction of the Wuzhou regime.
