Literary and Ritual Narratives in Meng Jiangnu Bianwen
The nine manuscripts of the Meng Jiangnu story in the Dunhuang manuscripts have always been regarded by the academic community as important materials for studying the Meng Jiangnu legend.Different from traditional manuscript research,the specific forms of these manuscripts have received increasing atten-tion in recent years.From the perspective of the written form,Meng Jiangnu Bianwen has the ritual function of summoning souls and offering sacrifices.When the storytelling art of Meng Jiangnu Bianwen became a ritual performance with the function of offering sacrifices,the literary narrative of Meng Jiangnu Bianwen evolved into a ritualized narrative with the special function of communicating with the world of gods and spirits.The literary narrative of Meng Jiangnu Bianwen seems less important,while the symbolic meaning of the ritualized narrative was highlighted.Therefore,its narrative meaning was far from the hatred of life and death between common people and couples,but became a social memory that could arouse public emotions.
